The Aga Khan Palace is a National Monument of India. It played a very important role during the Indian freedom movement. Located in Pune, Maharashtra, the magnificent Palace stands on a vast area surrounded by a beautiful garden. It was built in 1892 by Sultan Aga Khan III, after a famine in the region. It generated employment for the famine -affected people. During the fight against the British in 1942, Mahatma Gandhi was arrested and kept under house arrest here, for close to two years. Other noted leaders, including Gandhiji's wife Kasturba Gandhi, were also imprisoned here.

Did you know? The Palace is now known as the 'Gandhi National Memorial'. a small collection of Gandhiji's ashes are kept here. National festivals and other notable days such as Martyrs' Day and Gandhi Jayanti are observed.
