A Trip to Rameshwaram

A TRIP TO RAMESHWARAM

Author : SREERAM NIVEDH

Dear readers,

I want to share my experience, fun moments and historical importance of "A Trip to Rameswaram & near by places". This trip covered places of spiritual, inspirational and historical.

First we reached Madurai by train and visited the holy shrine of Meenakshi Amman & Sundareswaran. It is a very big temple constructed by Pandya kings and it took hours for us to see the temple. My dad bought a book for me to understand the history of Madurai.

From Madurai, we went to Rameswaram, a place associated with Lord Rama. Rameswaram is a very old town and the main deity here is RAMA LINGESWARA which was installed by Lord Rama after defeating the demon Ravana. The temple has 24 different wells (tirthas) and we took bath before going to Darshan. The bath from these holy tirthas will penance us from sins. I have visited few places near Rameswaram like

Historical & Spiritual:
Ramasethu - a bridge built by Hanuman & other Vaanaras to reach Lanka.
Floating stones - the stones used to build Ramasethu. To my surprise, our assumption of stone sinks in water fails here :) these stones float in water.
Danushkodi temple - a place where Lord Rama crowned Vibhishana (brother of Ravana) after defeating Ravana. By the way, I played in the back waters of the SEA and enjoyed.
Villoondi Teertham - Lord Rama made this teertham to quench the thirst of Seetha by dipping the bow into the sea water.

Beaches & Bridges:
Danushkodi - This place was fully destroyed by a Cyclone and it has become un-inhabitable. Hence it is called as a Ghost Town but tourists still visit this place.
Danushkodi beach - A scenic beauty where Bay of Bengal (green water) and Indian Ocean (blue water) merge. We enjoyed the wind-driven waves and the sounds of the ocean.
Pamban bridge - It was the India's first sea bridge opened on 1914 to connect Pamban Islands with the town of Mandapam. It is one the finest engineering work where the bridge double-leaf bascule will raise when a SHIP comes. Believe me, you will be surprised by seeing this.

Inspirational:
House of Kalam: Our beloved former President Abdul Kalam is from Rameswaram and we visited the House of Kalam. Now it is converted into a museum where I saw the things used by Kalam, photos of his child hood and young age, accolades received by Kalam.
APJ Abdul Kalam National Memorial - This is inaugurated by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2017. This Memorial was built on the grave site of Dr. Kalam, a Missile Man of India. I saw the video of Dr. Kalam last speech which was held at IIM, Shillong.

Guys, no trip will end without a shopping - I bought different key chains made with Shells & Conch, small wood spinning top, a packet of cowrie shells (old time dice) used to play games like Ludo, snake & ladder etc., a big shell with "N" letter on it (N - Nivedh).

I am really amazed to share above experiences and memories with you and while writing this blog I felt like visiting these places again.

Hope you enjoyed reading this blog.
