The Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is widely considered as one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. It is located in Agra, Utter Pradesh. "Taj Mahal" literally means 'crown of buildings'. The Taj is a mausoleum, or tomb, built by the Mughal emperor shah jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Shah Jahan was extremely found of Mumtaz. They had fourteen children. During the birth of their fourteenth child, Mumtaz died. The emperor grew very sad. According to a legend his hair turned white overnight. He ordered his constructions of the Taj Mahal as a tribute of their love.

The construction started in 1632, and it took more than 20 years to build. Twenty thousand labourers were required to complete the tomb. The chief designer of Taj was Ustad Ahmad Lahauri. The architecture combines Indian and Persian styles. The tomb is made of white marble and stands on a square base. There are tall towers, called minarets, standing at each corner of the building. The minarets tilt slightly away from the main building. This is to ensure that they won't fall on he building if there is a earthquake. The main building is the cubical structure with a giant dome on the top.
Several colorful semi-precious stones were used to decorate the outer walls. Holy verses were inscribed on the wall in calligraphic style. The colors of the tomb change at various times of the day. The Taj Mahal attracts millions of visitors every year, many of them foreign tourists.
