A Day To Remember.

The night dawned on the gloomy day slower than usual. I sat in my terrace looking at the clear sky which was a mixture of green and blue; no stars, just the moon, royal as ever. I closed my eyes but I could still see the sky. It was time I slept before my mother comes looking for me with a chore I never asked for. I closed my eyes and sleep came to me without any ado, after all the upcoming day was not routine, it was going to be special.

I woke up without the help of the human alarm. I was surprisingly early, but there was no time to waste. I had to get dressed soon and leave my house. The orphanage was an hour and a half ride from my house. I was going to visit the place with my brother. The journey was a little tiring but I could not wait to be there. My father had organised a feast in the afternoon for the kids in the orphanage. To my knowledge, there were going to be 18 children there. I had bought some clothes and note books for them too.

My brother and I walked in together. As elevated I was to meet the kids, I was equally nervous. It was a small place with small buildings at an arms distance from each other and a small playground close to the entrance. The children were running all around and playing with each other. They were approximately aged between 6 and 13. Their supervisor noticed our advent and hushed the kids down. He made them sit in three lines. They were very obedient. My brother bought the clothes and the notebooks from the car. I carefully distributed the objects. Each one of them looked at it like it was treasure. They slowly held the other end with overwhelmed eyes. Their behaviour was so delicate. One would think that they were handling a gem. I could not believe that one could be so ecstatic receiving new clothes. They showed their gratitude by smiling so big, that all their teeth were visible. It was the most wonderful sight I had ever seen. I stood their amazed and taken aback.

The ride back home, I revisited my past memories. It was like a trip to Memory Land. I had enough to live happily, but of course I wanted more. I had so much and never realised its value. I had such great parents. I had a family who would stand by me no matter what. The visit to the orphanage changed the way I perceived situations. There were so many occasions that I would be irritated by how my parents treated me, but there were even more occasions when they loved me and forgave my mistakes. I did not know that I was indeed an opportunist to have all this. I could not wait to go home and hug my parents.

That day, a lesson was learnt and my ego left behind to rot.
