Elements and Compounds

Elements

There are different types of elements. Each type of element has special properties and is different from all other types of elements. It is a substance which cannot be broken into a simpler substance.

There are 118 elements. In that, 92 are natural.

Elements are divided into 4 types – Metals, non-metals, Metalloids, noble/inert gas

Metals

* They are hard solids

* They have shine

* They have high melting and boiling points. Ex: gold, silver, aluminium, sodium and zinc

Non-metals

* They are soft solids/gases.

* They do not have shine

* They have low melting point. Ex-Sulphur, chlorine, iodine, bromine

METALLOIDS

* These are the elements which exhibit intermediate properties between those of metals and non-metals. Ex: Silicon, germanium, arsenic, antimony

GAS

These are the elements which do not react chemically with other elements. Ex- helium, neon, argon, krypton
