Maha Shivratri

Maha Shivratri..... This festival is celebrated on the day when Lord Shiva performed the heavenly dance and this day is devoted to Lord Shiva. Some people choose to have a fast in which they can only eat Fruits, Potato dishes, Milk dishes, and dry fruits. This year in 2021 we are celebrating on Thursday, 11th March. The fasting starts at dawn and it continues all day and night. In strict fasting performed by saints or devotees, they cannot eat anything except drinking water.

Many people don’t sleep all night because there is a so-called "jaagarane" and it is also believed that we should be awake because on this night lord shiva will be awake all night searching for the light of immortal consciousness in us. Shivratri is a unique festival that occurs on different dates every year. It always rains on Shivratri and people light up fire because there is a saying that, lord shiva is feeling cold, light firewood to make him warm. People clean their house and worship lord shiva by doing puja and going to the temple to pray. The syllables Na Ma Shi Va Ya mean the five elements Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and ether. This night was also the night when Shiva and Parvathi got married.

The difference between Shivratri and maha Shivratri is that Shivratri comes every month and maha Shivratri comes once a year. It is a religious festival observed by Hindus and is also one of the biggest festivals for Hindus.
